Why officiating matters

Swim meets and time trials can’t run without trained volunteers. Timers and other officials help ensure swims are recorded accurately, races are run fairly, and events stay on schedule. When more families volunteer, it reduces the load on a small number of people and makes it easier for Tritons to host time trials and attend meets.

The easiest way to start: become a timer

If you’re new to officiating, timing is the best place to begin. To time at meets, you must be registered as an official and complete two short online modules.

How to become a timer (4 steps)

Step 1: Register annually in Swim Canada REMS

Anyone wishing to participate in swim meets as a timer must first register as an official through Swim Canada’s REMS system. This registration is completed annually.

Step 2: Log in to LMS from your REMS account

After creating your REMS account, log in and select Login to LMS.

Step 3: Complete the two required e-modules

Complete both online modules in the LMS:

• Safety Marshall e-module

• Introduction to Swim Officiating e-module

Step 4: Claim your PPP and sign up to time

Once both modules are complete, submit the PPP reporting form to record your points. You earn 2 PPP for earning your qualifications and can now sign up as a timer at time trials and swim meets.
